Despite the fact that I very much enjoy reading about bloggers’ significant others and the cute things they do together, I have been embarrassed to share my own romanic adventures on the internet.
[If you are only interested in Valentine's dinner food porn, scroll to the bottom of the post!]
It’s probably a little strange to bring up having a food blog on the first date, but then when do you do it? After a month? Two months? For me, I guess it was eight months! It felt wrong to talk about him on the blog when he didn’t know about it, but now he does, so here we go:
Chip and I met over the summer right after I got back from Bonnaroo. He lives in Atlanta and had come up to Athens to watch his friend’s band play. We immediately hit it off.
Summer is an great time to start dating somebody especially when his friend has a beach house
.
I quit my waitressing job in Athens and moved to Atlanta in December. The main reason is that I was sick of waitressing full time, and I wanted to try to do something else with my life (semi-excited news about that later!), but it’s also nice to be close to him, of course.
Not only has he been a good boyfriend, but he is also a great cooking partner and workout buddy, so it’s really a shame I haven’t talked about him on the blog sooner!
I was actually outed about my blog by friend a couple weeks ago. We set her up with one of his friends, and she brought up my blog while they were waiting for me to show up for a double date. So now its out in the open, and I can start sharing all the awesome meals we make together! Starting with Valentines Day 2010.
Our first Valentines Day adventure was rock climbing at Atlanta Rocks. He had been climbing a few times before, but it was my first time! Rock climbing is actually a good couples activity because you do it in pairs. One person climbs while attached to a rope while the other person is at the bottom attached to the pulley thing that saves their life if they fall.
I’m not afraid of heights, but I am afraid of having someone’s life in my hands, so being at the bottom was way scarier! In the end, we had a lot of fun, and no one died, so I’d say it was a successful activity!
On to the meal! We went all out on this one. Starting with fruit and cheese:
And a ribeye steak for two:
Chip made a red wine reduction sauce for the steak based on a recipe his friend who went to cooking school taught him:
In the sauce:
- half an onion
- a large carrot
- baby portabello mushrooms (a large handful)
- small can of beef broth
- a couple cups of red wine
- butter (added at the end)
It takes a long time for the liquid to reduce to a sauce consistency. We let it cook for about an hour, and then cheated and added a bit of flour to thicken it up!
Shrimp was on sale, so we also sauteed some shrimp in lemon, garlic, and butter:
For some veggies, I sauteed some kale with a splash of red wine. Yum!
My plate:
The sauce on the steak was to die for!! It was also amazing on the kale! I ate all my kale, about half of the steak, and most of my shrimp. It was a huge meal, but sooo delicious! We were very happy with how it turned out
.
Did you eat anything special on Valentine’s Day?
Also, how do you decide who you tell about your blog? Is there anyone significant in your life (family member, good friend, boy/girl friend) who doesn’t know?

YAAYYYYYY!!! It’s about time!!! Glad you guys finally got to go climbing!!! Sounds like a fantastic day!! I’m still wondering where dessert went though!
v-day dessert= wine. don’t worry, i’m eating plenty of chocolate at home!! how did your truffles turn out?
aww such cute pics, you guys make a beautiful couple. i don’t tell ANYONE in “real life” about my blog. it’s weird because blogging is such a big part of my life but i’m totally chicken
So…how did he take it?! Sorry, I’m nosey
I told everyone about my blog from the beginning. I was definitely wary of people I know coming across it because I was kind of embarrassed for some reason, but I decided that if I’m gonna have a blog I’m just gonna OWN it, you know? Now I tell everyone and their mother about my blog, haha =)
Yum, looks great.
Most of my friends know about the blog, but my parents don’t. I just sometimes talk about certain aspects of my life that I’m unhappy with and sort of don’t want them to know that their daughter isn’t always happy, as unrealistic as that sounds!
What part of Atlanta do you guys live in? I live near Virginia-Highlands.
I was already dating my boyfriend when I started my blog. And while I don’t think I told him immediately, it was pretty close to the start and it wasn’t really a big deal. Actually in general, most of my close friends, as well as my immediate family know about it.
Generally, I am pretty open with my friends and family, but acquaintances (aka Facebook friends) do NOT know…
Thanks for sharing about Chip! You two seem really happy!
I generally try to be as open about it as I can, but I can understand feeling hesitant. It can seem different, to say the least.
And what a gorgeous dinner! That red wine reduction sounds great!
awwwwh what a great story, you guys are too cute. I love being with someone who also likes to cook and share in an active lifestyle too
We had a nice pizza dinner and made heart-shaped waffles. I tell friends and family, but try to keep it separate from work. That’s a tough one and always have to be careful what is said just in case!
Gahhh dinner looks so good! Surf and turf is my favorite
I love reading how people met.
I haven’t told much of my extended family about my blog. I definitely have visibility issues with some of my aunts and uncles. Isn’t it funny how we can share our lives with complete strangers, but sometimes the people closest to us is more difficult?
Totally cute! John is actually the one that pushed me to start my blog, so you can blame him for it LOL
you guys are too cute!
because of vday, i recently posted the story of how me and the Mister met — so fun to hear about bloggies other halfs!
Awwww!! I loved reading about you and your may-ne! I guess that being outed by someone else would take the nerves out of explaining it
Sounds like a successful V-day!!
I started my blog three years after being with Nick, and he has been a huge part of it ever since. I don’t know how I would handle it if I started dating someone IN the process, I’d probably say something right away! You started dating right when I started reading your blog! I remember you going to Bonnaroo, and I was jealous
The two of you are adorable together, and it sounds like you have some similar passions. Ironically, your Valentine’s day meal is VERY similar to Nick and my V-day meal! We did steak, lobster with butter sauce, and sauteed spinach, close!
I’m glad everything is out in the open, and you can talk about Chip with us, and talk about us with Chip, it’s fun, right?!
Climbing looks like it was such a blast!
